Whittle Wonderland - Winter Pattern Pack
Carve a whole winter scene (a tree, a penguin, a snowman, and a polar bear) from a single 12" practice stick. Welcome to Whittle Wonderland, an odd and magical little world where penguins and polar bears get together to build snowmen.
Whittle Wonderland started as my in-person beginner class. These patterns follow the same order I teach in class, so each carving builds the skills you’ll need for the next, even if you’ve never held a carving knife before.
Carve the whole scene from one 12" practice stick. The four patterns use 1 x 1" blocks that add up to 12":
Winter Tree (3.5")
Penguin on Ice (2.5")
Snowman (3")
Polar Bear (3")
Learn in order, one skill at a time. The patterns are arranged from simplest to most challenging. Branch notches on the tree become the penguin’s flippers, and techniques carry forward from one carving to the next.
What’s inside:
True-to-size patterns for all four carvings when printed on 8.5 x 11" paper
Photos from every side of the block, plus corner views for the carvings that are carved on the corner
Hand-drawn pattern diagrams to transfer onto your block
Carving tips to help you succeed
You’ll need: a roughout knife and/or detail knife, and cut-resistant gloves. A #11/3mm gouge is optional for adding texture to the tree branches.
