"Not a Monster" is a portrait study of Frankenstein's monster. A reimagining of the classic monster archetype — proof that something misunderstood can still be beautiful.
A true collaboration with wood: the bark fracture accents the brow; the narrowing of the bark defines the bust; deepened grooves in the outer bark are integrated as bolts; and weariness of the eyes are expressed in the natural grain forming the irises.
The original carving is currently on exhibit at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis as part of Maria's year-long Lechleiter Visiting Artist residency.
This before & after print captures what's possible with care and patience — salvaged tree bark transformed into a work of art, shown side by side.
